Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
